The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed claims of Nadia Mabvirakare’s abduction, asserting instead that the environmentalist is a suspect in a criminal investigation.
In a press statement released yesterday, the ZRP dismissed the rampant speculation about Mabvirakare’s disappearance, describing social media reports as misleading the public about the actual situation on the ground and the ongoing police investigations.
According to the police, Mabvirakare is being investigated for allegedly misappropriating USD 15,200 that was intended for a greenhouse project in Murehwa, a collaboration between her organization, Green Rebirth Trust, and the Matiza Foundation.
“Vongai Nadia Mabvirakare is a suspect in a case of contravening Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23, ‘Theft of trust property,’” the statement clarified.
Police reports indicate that instead of using the funds for their intended purpose, Mabvirakare allegedly diverted the money for personal use and acquired building materials on credit under false pretenses linked to the Matiza Foundation. When the supplier, Brickforce Hardware, discovered the unpaid balance, they contacted the Matiza Foundation, prompting a police report.
On March 5, 2025, a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Murehwa attempted to locate Mabvirakare at her residence in Chitungwiza, but were unable to find her.
Her son, Patrick Mabvirakare, informed the officers that she was currently away.
Later that evening, news of her sudden disappearance began circulating, igniting a nationwide outcry.
With Mabvirakare now located and under police guard, the ZRP has stated that full-scale investigations are currently underway concerning the case of theft of trust property, as well as the allegations brought forth by her family.
The circumstances surrounding Mabvirakare’s disappearance remain shrouded in mystery, with ongoing questions about whether her situation is tied to business-related disputes or political pressures.
