Harare – Major upgrades to Zimbabwe’s flagship sports facility, the National Sports Stadium, are progressing steadily, with several key components already nearing completion.

This was revealed by Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube during his presentation of the 2025 Mid-Term Budget Review Statement in Parliament yesterday.

According to the Minister, the refurbishment of the National Sports Stadium is now at an advanced stage, with key progress including the near-completion of bucket seat installation at 90%, 40% of the turf reconstruction already done, full installation of turnstiles at Gate 1, completion of cabling and tubing for the venue’s operating systems, and ongoing work to restore the water reticulation system.

“These upgrades are a major step forward in bringing the stadium up to modern standards and improving the experience for both athletes and spectators,” said Prof. Ncube.

The renovations are expected to align the stadium with international sporting requirements and pave the way for Zimbabwe to host major regional and global events in the near future.

While infrastructure improvements take centre stage, Minister Ncube also reported developments in other sectors.

The health sector received ZiG7 billion in support, with ZiG5.7 billion allocated to salaries for healthcare workers and ZiG1.1 billion used for operational costs, including the procurement of medical supplies and services worth ZiG600 million.

In the media and information sector, the government is implementing Zim Digital Phase 2, a nationwide project to improve access to information by installing new transmitters. The Lyeja Community Radio Station in Hwange became operational in February 2025, and the newly launched National Media Policy aims to promote professionalism, diversity, and inclusivity in the media space.
