THE National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has joined the nation in congratulating newly appointed Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza and Deputy Chief Justice Paddington Garwe following their elevation to the country’s highest judicial offices.

In separate statements released this week, Prosecutor General and NPAZ Board Chairperson, Hon. Loyce Matanda-Moyo, together with the authority’s board, management and staff, described the appointments as milestones for Zimbabwe’s justice delivery system.

Congratulating Chief Justice Gwaunza, the NPAZ said her appointment was historic as she becomes the first woman to assume the country’s highest judicial office.

“The Prosecutor General and Board Chairperson of the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Hon. Loyce Matanda-Moyo, the NPAZ Board, management and staff extend their warmest and heartfelt congratulations to Hon. Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza on her historic appointment as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Zimbabwe,” read part of the statement.

The NPAZ praised Justice Gwaunza for her “distinguished, illustrious and exemplary service to the Judiciary,” adding that her elevation reflects decades of dedication to justice, integrity and the rule of law.

NPAZ said her appointment was not only a source of national pride, but also a sign of Zimbabwe’s continued progress towards inclusive leadership, gender equality and women empowerment.

On Deputy Chief Justice Garwe, the NPAZ said his experience on the Constitutional Court and commitment to judicial ethics.

“Justice Garwe’s distinguished service on the Constitutional Court since 2021, and his unwavering commitment to justice, integrity and the rule of law, reflect the qualities essential for this high office,” the statement said.

The NPAZ said Justice Garwe’s appointment was a testament to his “vast judicial experience, professionalism and dedication to the administration of justice.”

NPAZ said the Deputy Chief Justice would play a key role in strengthening the justice delivery system, enhancing access to justice and upholding accountability within the judiciary.

The appointments of Chief Justice Gwaunza and Deputy Chief Justice Garwe have been widely welcomed by various institutions and stakeholders across Zimbabwe’s legal fraternity.
