Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates secured a 2-1 victory against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premier Soccer League at First National Bank Stadium over the weekend.
Following their 4-1 defeat against the Brazilians in the season’s reverse fixture, the Buccaneers dished a perfect revenge claiming a hard fought 2-1 victory at home delaying Sundowns’ celebrations as league champions.
Pirates’ Relebogile Mofokeng, affectionately known as the 2k president, scored a brace within the first 5 minutes of the game , before Khuliso Mudau pulled a consolation goal for the Brazilians on minute 66.
Despite Mudau getting one back to give Sundowns hope in the game, it was not be as Pirates were determined to garner maximum points and showed in their resolute defending.
After defeating Sundowns, Pirates will need to push harder to secure maximum points in all their remaining games to keep their title dreams alive. The Buccaneers are left with four games in hand, occupying second position on 43 points.
Meanwhile, Sundowns lead the table with 58 points and need three more points.
Pirates are chasing the dream of ending Sundowns’ eight consecutive title, however there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that goal, as the Brazilians have managed to open a significant gap, and Pirates will have to move mountains and hopd for a monumental collapse from Sundowns to have a sniff at the title.
