BULAWAYO – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has emphasised the importance of environmental responsibility in the mining sector, highlighting it as a critical duty for the industry to protect the environment for both current and future generations due to its significant impact on natural resources.
Speaking at the official opening of the 27th edition of the Mining, Engineering and Transport Expo, President Mnangagwa underscored the shared responsibility of mining companies and other stakeholders to strictly adhere to environmental regulations while maintaining their social license to operate.
“Mining houses and other stakeholders have the obligation to commit to strict adherence to environmental regulations while maintaining the social licence to operate”. He stated
Additionally, he also urged mining companies to develop cleaner and more environmentally friendly solutions throughout their business processes, enhancing both efficiency and reliability.
“Mining houses are called upon to work together to prudently use energy and water, while also lowering emissions and reducing waste generation,” he stated
Meanwhile The President commended mining companies that have already taken significant steps towards sustainability by investing in renewable energy sources, such as solar power, noting that these initiatives play a vital role in reducing the industry’s carbon footprint
Furthermore, President Mnangagwa encouraged players in the mining sector to invest in projects that boost production and productivity within communities.
As the expo unfolds, the President’s call to action resonates with participants, urging them to prioritise environmental stewardship and community development as integral components of their operations.
