Residents of Mbedzi area in Beitbridge are calling for urgent assistance following a rat infestation that is plaguing their homes and businesses.

Different types of rats including very small adult pests, the medium and large rodents have been marauding in the high density suburb.

Speaking to Ziyah Media, Thomas Moyo, said the rats have become a serious problem in the area, damaging property and spreading quickly.

“It’s been about three months now with this rats outbreak. They are destroying our kitchen units, sofas, and even our blankets. We tried using chemicals in our homes, but the problem is not going away. Some of our neighbours are not taking any action, and this is making the situation worse,” said Moyo.

Another resident, Memory Mutikani (35), who runs a tuck shop, shared similar concerns. She said the rats are causing major losses in her grocery business.

“In our tuck shops, rats are eating our stock like mealie-meal, snacks, and peanut butter. This is how we earn a living, but the rats are leaving us with nothing. Even after using chemicals, they keep coming back because not everyone is trying to get rid of them,” said Mutikani.

Richardo Mugadza, another Mbedzi resident, said that the rats pose a serious health risk.

“Rats can spread dangerous diseases like plague, hantavirus, salmonella, and leptospirosis. These diseases are a big threat, especially to vulnerable people in Beitbridge,” Mugadza said.

The residents are appealing to pest control companies, government agencies, healthcare providers, and international organisations to step in and help stop the outbreak.

“We are asking for help. This issue needs serious attention before it gets worse,” said Mugadza.

The outbreak highlights the need for coordinated efforts in pest control, sanitation, and public health awareness in Beitbridge.
