The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) Chairperson, Mr Michael Reza has given the clearest hint on the struggles the Commission faces in trying to recover proceeds of crime stashed outside of the country’s borders. The ZACC boss said recovering wealth stolen from the country is not an easy task as he addressed Zimbabwe’s ambassadors who were taking their integrity pledges urging the ambassadors representing the nation across the world to assist the commission in that regard.

“Zimbabwe faces serious hurdles in obtaining cooperation on extra-territorial investigations. Recovering proceeds of corruption stashed in foreign safe havens has proven arduous. It is our hope that as you go back to your postings, you are going to help Zimbabwe forge beneficial relations with designated legal Institutions for mutual legal assistance, “said the ZACC Chairperson.

As he assisted the ambassadors to take their pledge, he reminded them of their crucial role when it comes to assisting in dealing with corruption, a challenge that threatens to derail the economic aspirations of the country.

“The role of Ambassadors and Heads of Missions in the fight against corruption cannot be overemphasized. It goes beyond simply avoiding corrupt practices as individuals. As Ambassadors you are strategically placed to assist the country by providing liaison services on extra-territorial investigations, information- sharing and coordination between our anti-corruption agencies and those in countries where you are posted,” he added.

The ZACC has been leading the taking of integrity pledges by Government agencies, Ministers, ambassadors as the Commission seeks to foster the spirit of transparency within the operations of Government.
