THE South African National Defence Force has seized contraband valued at R695,000 from smugglers during a Beitbridge Border Operation.
During the operation smugglers reportedly fled empty-handed as the serviceman squeezed them out of the highly active banks of thr Limpopo River corridors.
“Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confiscated illicit goods valued at more than R695,000 during operations at the Beitbridge Port of Entry in Limpopo on Sunday, 26 July 2026. The seizures followed a week of intensified border operations aimed at disrupting cross-border smuggling and protecting South Africa’s economic integrity,” said the Officer Commanding 4 Artillery Regiment Lieutenant Colonel Mmamaeke Emmanuel Mello.
He said his his team implemented a renewed strategy based on military training and operational doctrine.
“During a foot patrol on the eastern side of the Beitbridge Port of Entry, Bravo Company, led by Sergeant Mavundla, intercepted suspects transporting illicit goods. The suspects fled after spotting SANDF members, abandoning luggage containing illicit cigarettes valued at R534,531.00.”
He said at the same time, SANDF members operating on the opposite side of the Beitbridge Port of Entry (western side of the Limpopo from Beitbridge town) carried out a similar operation, confiscating additional illicit cigarettes worth R145 770.00 and alcoholic beverages valued at R14,880.00.
“All confiscated goods, with a combined value of R695,181.00, were handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation and processing in line with standard operating procedures,” he said.
It is reported the Acting Officer Commanding Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo Lieutenant Colonel Joy Stasie praised the members for their professionalism, discipline and commitment. Stasie said the success reflected strong leadership, careful planning and the effective application of years of military training.
The SANDF said it remains committed to supporting law enforcement agencies in combating smuggling and illicit trade along South Africa’s borders.
