The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed concerns raised on social media regarding the state of a military building in Grahamstown, clarifying that the facility is not currently in use.

In a statement released on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, the SANDF said it had taken note of a post made by Mr. Carl Niehaus about the condition of the building, which belongs to 6 South African Infantry Battalion (6 SAI Bn).

According to the Defence Force, the building is not occupied and is therefore not being used for accommodation or any other purpose.

The SANDF further explained that its Defence Works Regiment has already conducted a scope of work on the facility with the intention of refurbishing it for future use by unit members. Until renovations are completed, the building will remain unoccupied.

“The SANDF remains committed to maintaining and upgrading its infrastructure to ensure that its facilities provide a conducive environment for the wellbeing of all members,” the statement read.

The Defence Force reaffirmed that it is actively working to improve living and working conditions across its bases and rejected suggestions that the Grahamstown facility is currently in use.
