Harare — Six dismissed workers allegedly attacked their former Chinese boss and manager, Ni Hong, at Ryagri Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd in Southerton, Harare, last week, before stealing $10,000 in cash, claiming it represented unpaid salaries.
The incident occurred around 11:00 AM at the company premises, according to police reports. Law enforcement officials said the group physically assaulted Ni Hong before fleeing the scene with the significant amount of money.
The police swiftly responded, arresting all six suspects involved in the altercation: Stella Kahari (25), an administration staff member; Anele Moyo (25), a translation specialist; Kudakwashe Zhakata (30), a sales representative; Nigel Willie (27), a sales team member; Jeffrey Wenhira (41); and Delight Gumula (27).
Following their arrest, authorities recovered $3,775 of the stolen cash from the suspects. The victim was able to identify his attackers, which facilitated the arrests, police confirmed.
Harare Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza provided further details on the investigation, stating:
“The suspects, all former employees, confronted the victim demanding payment of alleged salary arrears. When advised to contact their previous Chinese manager, now based in Botswana, they became aggressive. The situation escalated into physical violence, resulting in the theft of $10,000 cash from the complainant’s possession.”
Inspector Chakanza emphasized that the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to establish all the facts surrounding the case.
This incident underscores the risks of unresolved employment disputes turning violent.
Legal experts warn that while workers have the right to pursue unpaid wages through proper channels, resorting to criminal acts such as violence and theft can lead to severe legal consequences.
The six accused individuals now face charges of robbery, with potential assault charges also under consideration as the judicial process proceeds.
