POLITICAL activist Bhekimpilo Mbedzi remains incarcerated due to a technicality his lawyer believes can only be solved when the High court sits Wednesday.
Patrick Tererai of Tereral Legal Practice said Mbedzi is not a holder of a valid passport which he should surrender as part of his $200 bail.
“We have already secured written confirmation that his passport expired and that condition must be altered on the bail conditions for my client. Unfortunately the High Court will resume sitting Wednesday when the condition will be altered,” Tererai told Ziyah News Network.
Mbedzi, a provincial member of the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) Matabeleland South, was granted bail, overturning an earlier decision by the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court to keep him in custody.
Masvingo High Court Judge, Justice Christopher Dube-Banda, asked Mbedzi to surrender his passport, report to the police twice a week deposit $200 with the clerk of court at Beitbridge.
The outspoken Mbedzi was arrested at his home in Beitbridge on 15 July 2026 and taken in for questioning before he was charged for allegedly inciting people to commit public violence.
Tererai however said a local court could have resolved the issue in the circumstances where authentic documents had been presented.
“Essentially he has no passport, its expired and we could not locate it. His wife failed to find it,” said Tererai.
