Bali, Indonesia — A 32-year-old South African woman is facing the death penalty in Indonesia after being arrested at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport on July 13 for allegedly smuggling nearly one kilogram of crystal methamphetamine.

The woman, who had traveled from Johannesburg via Singapore, was apprehended during a routine customs inspection. Authorities say the drugs were found concealed in her clothing. Bali’s anti-narcotics official, I Made Sinar Subawa, stated the woman confessed to being sent from Johannesburg to deliver the package to a recipient in Bali.

The arrest has sparked intense online debate in South Africa, with social media users expressing mixed reactions  ranging from sympathy to anger.

“My problem is what if she was forced? But if she went there willingly, then Bali must do what their laws say,” one user commented.

Others criticized the South African government’s perceived leniency on drug crime.

“We need to also be harsh on drugs. Pity our police and politicians are aiding drug cartels,” another wrote.

Some brought up previous drug trafficking cases involving South Africans abroad, referencing a woman executed in Botswana and other citizens imprisoned across Asia.

“I thought South Africans learned from the Botswana girl,” read one post.

“South African women and the desperation for companionship will forever annoy me,” added another, highlighting growing frustration with recurring cases.

The woman’s arrest coincided with that of a Brazilian man caught with over three kilograms of cocaine in his luggage the same day. Indonesian authorities have stated the two incidents are not connected.

Indonesia enforces some of the strictest drug laws in the world, including capital punishment for trafficking offenses. Several foreign nationals are currently on death row under similar charges.

The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has not yet issued a formal statement on the case.
