A community tip off to a child protection officer has led to the arrest and sentencing of a 48 year old Guruve man for raping his 12 year old niece.
The offender was convicted and sentenced by the Guruve Circuit Regional Court to a 20 year old prison term.
Circumstances presented in court are Tha on the 13th of November, 2024, in a village in Guruve. The victim, who is the offender’s niece and a Grade 6 pupil, was cleaning a kitchen hut when the offender entered and raped her.
Despite the victim’s cries for help, the offender’s wife initially did not respond. However, she later entered the hut and witnessed the act. After the incident, the offender’s wife and the victim’s grandmother attempted to handle the matter at a family level, instructing the victim to keep silent. The truth came to light when a Child Protection Officer received a community tip-off.
Disguising herself as a representative from Camfed (Campaign for Female Education) to gain the grandmother’s trust, the officer interviewed the victim, who then revealed the rape. This swift intervention by the Child Protection Officer ensured that the case was reported to the proper authorities, leading to the offender’s arrest.
This case highlights the critical importance of protecting children from sexual predator and the impact of community collaboration to being perpetrators to book.
