THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has appointed Allen Takudzwa Mavhunga as its new Director General, effective June 1, 2026.

The aim is to strengthen the commercialisation and sustainability of Zimbabwe’s sports sector.

In a statement released on Thursday the SRC Board of Commissioners announced that the appointment was made with the approval of the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Lieutenant General (Retired) Ambassador Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, in terms of Section 24 of the Sports and Recreation Act [Chapter 25:15].

SRC Board Chairman Dr. Nathaniel Madziyanyika said Mavhunga’s appointment comes at a critical time as the commission seeks to transform sport into a strategic contributor to the country’s economic growth and national development agenda.

Mavhunga brings extensive corporate and sports administration experience, having held senior positions in multinational sports administration, lotteries and gaming, national disaster relief, and sports infrastructure development.

“His professional background positions him well to drive institutional growth and modernisation within the commission,” said the SRC.

Academically, Mavhunga holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Liberty University in the United States of America.

He also obtained a Diploma in Olympic Sports Management from the International Olympic Committee.

A former athlete, Mavhunga represented Zimbabwe at regional sporting competitions and later served in directorship roles in basketball and baseball in the United States.

The SRC said his blend of sporting, managerial, and commercial expertise aligns with the commission’s strategic vision for the future of Zimbabwean sport.

The Board of Commissioners congratulated Mavhunga on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to reposition the SRC into a strategic engine for the country’s sports economy.

The commission said it expects the new Director General to play a key role in advancing the objectives of the National Development Strategy 2 and contributing towards the attainment of Vision 2030.
