THE Monday storm that resulted in a man being washed away by Wamlala stream, although he lived to tell the story, exposed poor workmanship when some building succumbed to the effects.

A clinic was among the affected buildings while several perimeter walls were reported to have been breached by the wind and floods.

A report compiled by the Beitbridge District Development Coordinator’s office showed some Government houses gave in under the storm.

“An assessment was done and the infrastructure damaged was done under rapid assessment. Three roofs were blown off at Government F14 houses and one house adjacent,” said the report prepared by administration officer Jahson Mugodzwa.

“A clinic was also affected. In industrial areas perimeter walls collapsed,” he wrote.

He said flooding was caused partly by drainage systems along high risk areas which were clogged needing clearance.

“Residents are reminded to play their roles by disposing litter properly to avoid after effects of blocked storm water drainages,” wrote Mugodzwa.

Monday’s violent storm may have also exposed the standard of some buildings in the town.

Most of these will have been certified fit during inspections or clandestinely built.
