 A tragic incident occurred at Maduveko Village Mataga in  Mberengwa, when two children a 4-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl drowned in a disused fish pond while collecting indigenous  fruits ‘nyii’.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) the children’s attempt to retrieve nyii fruits that had fallen into the pond proved fatal.

“The children were collecting nyii fruits at a desserted homestead where some of the fruits fell into the fish pond resulting in the victims diving in the pond to retrieve the fruits.”

This  incident, highlighting the dangers posed by abandoned water bodies, especially to children.
