Information Minister Jenfan Muswere has revealed that the ruling party, Zanu PF, will push Parliament to make constitutional amendments to enable President Emmerson Mnangagwa to retain power until 2030.

Muswere made the announcement at the launch of the Presidential War Veterans Fund, Presidential War Veterans Rural Home and Borehole Drilling Scheme at Dewedzo High School in Makoni West constituency on Saturday.

According to Muswere, Zanu PF passed Resolution # 1 at the party’s Annual National People’s Conference last October to extend Mnangagwa’s term of office, with the party leaders united in their decision.

“To those who think there are divisions at the top, listen, there is no noise in the cockpit. There is unity. Do you think there is anyone who loves the President more than those in the Presidium? Those people are united. Our leaders are truly united. There is no disharmony, we are driving the boat towards 2030,” Muswere said.

The information minister argued that making constitutional amendments is within Parliament’s legislative powers, which include amending the Constitution.

Muswere cited the country’s history, including the adoption of the Lancaster House Constitution and the current Constitution in 2013, to demonstrate that the Constitution has been amended before.

Muswere also emphasized that Zanu PF has grassroots support, which will aid in passing the constitutional amendments.

“We have massive grassroots support as Zanu PF, and with the collective resolution we have passed, it is a foregone conclusion – we have already won, regardless of whether we proceed to a referendum or plebiscite,” he said.

Muswere’s announcement comes amidst controversy surrounding the proposed amendments, with some war veterans opposing the move.

However, the information minister maintained that the constitutional amendment is a democratic process and that Zanu PF is confident that it will succeed.
