Two Zimbabwe Republic Police officers Rudo Chirengendure (28) and Nyasha Michael Mupandira (34) have appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of criminal abuse of duty as public officers.

The allegations stem from an incident  where the officers were deployed at Parkade rank in central Harare to apprehend illegal money changers, touts, and vendors.

According to reports, the officers while executing their official duties were captured on video receiving an illicit payment from a member of the public and unlawfully releasing a female suspect without due process. The footage, which circulated widely on social media, shows the officers removing handcuffs from the suspect.

The State submitted that the officers’ conduct constituted a serious violation of their responsibilities as public officers.

The prosecution requested that both accused persons be remanded in custody pending further investigations and court proceedings.

The duo will return to court on April 28 for a bail ruling.
