The Gweru Magistrates’ Court has sentenced 39 year old Owen Muchada to a mandatory 10-year imprisonment after he was convicted of vandalising National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) signal cables in Gweru.
The incident occurred when Muchada, along with his accomplice, Chrispen Hwesa, werecaught red-handed tampering with railway signal copper cables near Fairmile Siding, close to Dabuka.
The duo was found armed with a hacksaw, knives, a shovel, and a pick, which they used to dig up and cut over 100 metres of signal cables weighing approximately 38 kilograms.
Such vandalism poses serious safety risks, as these cables are vital for indicating train positions, powering signal lights at railway crossings, and preventing collisions — all essential for ensuring the safe passage of trains.
While Muchada initially managed to escape, Hwesa was immediately arrested by NRZ security personnel and later brought to justice. Muchada pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to his conviction, while Hwesa opted for a trial.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) emphasizes that theft and vandalism of public infrastructure, especially transport systems, are unlawful acts that threaten lives and compromise safety.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around railway lines to safeguard national assets.
