VHEMBE Stars Academy’s struggles continued on Matchday 24 after they suffered a 1-2 home defeat to Grain Tigers FC at Dulivhadzimu Stadium on Saturday.
The Beitbridge outfit went into the encounter hoping to use home advantage and collect maximum points and breathe life into their battle against relegation.
However, despite several opportunities, Vhembe Stars Academy once again struggled in front of goal and were punished by a more clinical Grain Tigers side.
Both teams started the match with attacking intent, with chances emerging inside the opening 10 minutes.
Vhembe Stars Academy looked eager to impose themselves on the game in front of their home supporters, while Grain Tigers responded with a determined approach of their own.
Neither side, however, was able to make the most of the early opportunities as the opening exchanges remained goalless.
Grain Tigers eventually broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when their captain and assistant coach, Newman Sianchali, put the visitors ahead.
Sianchal finished off a well-worked move after receiving a beautiful assist from Shelton Maravanyika, giving Grain Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
The goal appeared to settle the visitors, who grew increasingly comfortable as the first half progressed.
Vhembe Stars Academy tried to respond before the break, with Marshall Nhira coming close to restoring parity.
Nhira unleashed a powerful strike in search of an equaliser, but his effort sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Grain Tigers went into the halftime leading 1-0 and looking the more composed of the two sides.
Vhembe Stars Academy coach Paul Mugabiri wasted little time in attempting to change the direction of the match.
Exactly one minute after the restart, Mugabiri made a double substitution, bringing on Davies Nyamukondiwa and Thabo Mpande for Marshall Nhira and Jayden Matende.
The changes were intended to inject fresh energy and creativity into the home side, but they failed to produce the desired impact.
Vhembe Stars Academy continued to push forward in search of an equaliser, but their finishing remained their biggest problem.
The home side created openings but repeatedly failed to make the crucial final pass or finish their chances.
Grain Tigers, meanwhile, remained disciplined and looked dangerous whenever they moved forward.
Their persistence was rewarded again in the 78th minute when substitute Donald Nyakurimwa doubled the visitors’ advantage.
Nyakurimwa had entered the match just five minutes earlier, replacing Mthabisi Sibanda, and immediately made his presence felt by finding the back of the net to put Grain Tigers 2-0 ahead.
The second goal left Vhembe Stars Academy facing an uphill battle with time running out.
The home side refused to give up and continued pressing for a way back into the contest.
Their efforts finally paid off in added time when Tadyanemandu Denzel produced a moment of individual brilliance, firing a beautiful strike from outside the box to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The late goal gave the home supporters renewed hope, but there was not enough time for Vhembe Stars Academy to complete the comeback.
Grain Tigers held on to secure a valuable away victory and maximum points, while Vhembe Stars Academy were left to reflect on another frustrating afternoon.
The defeat further deepens Vhembe Stars Academy’s relegation concerns, with the Beitbridge side now facing an increasingly difficult battle to preserve their league status.
Their inability to convert chances into goals has emerged as a major concern, and unless they find a solution quickly, their winless run could have serious consequences as the season approaches its decisive stages.
Speaking after the match, Vhembe Stars Academy coach Paul Mugabiri expressed his frustration at his team’s failure to convert the opportunities they created.
“This is really bad. We create a lot of chances and we fail to convert them. I’m just hoping to regroup and come up with a solution to avoid relegation,” Mugabiri said.
Mugabiri’s comments highlighted the central problem facing his team.
For Grain Tigers, the victory provided a much-needed response after their previous league defeat to Blanket Mine.
Grain Tigers coach and former Highlanders defender Noah Mavindi praised his players for their commitment and determination in securing maximum points away from home.
“We did a great job. The boys gave everything. They scored and we managed to win, which is great redemption because we lost our previous match against Blanket Mine in the league,” Mavindi said.
The victory will provide Grain Tigers with renewed confidence as they look to build momentum during the remainder of the campaign.
For Vhembe Stars Academy, however, the focus now turns to finding answers.
With this results the El nino winning drought and relegation topic is a reality which needs to be addressed before the little Beitbridge boat sinks into its own Limpopo River.
