The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a set of temporary recommendations aimed at assisting States Parties in managing the transmission of the monkeypox virus (MPXV).

These measures are particularly pertinent for regions experiencing sustained community transmission or clusters of cases, featuring a renewed focus on controlling the spread of mpox.

The announcement follows the third meeting of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee, which took place on February 25, 2025.

“These temporary recommendations are intended to be implemented by those States Parties experiencing the transmission of monkeypox virus,” stated the Director-General

These measures include securing political commitment and adequate resource allocation at local administrative levels, establishing robust emergency coordination mechanisms, and enhancing collaborative surveillance to ensure comprehensive geographic coverage.

Additionally, the recommendations emphasize expanding access to diagnosis and clinical care, increasing cross-border collaboration for managing suspected cases, and implementing targeted vaccination strategies for high-risk populations.

Who also highlight the importance of strengthening community engagement efforts to combat stigma and misinformation, as well as ensuring that all actions uphold human rights and dignity, in line with the International Health Regulations.

The WHO emphasized that these measures must be implemented with full respect for human dignity and rights, as stipulated in the International Health Regulations (2005).

States Parties are encouraged to report quarterly to WHO on the progress and challenges related to these recommendations.
