A 54-year-old Zimbabwean activist, William Chinyanga, is set to be deported to Zimbabwe after serving a prison sentence for incitement to violence in the United Kingdom.
Chinyanga was convicted for posting disturbing videos on Facebook that called for violent attacks against Zimbabwean security forces.
The activist, a known critic of Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party, livestreamed inflammatory speeches in December 2019, urging his followers to carry out bombings targeting police officers and soldiers.
The UK authorities deemed these statements a severe public safety threat.
In one of the videos, he was quoted saying, “Operations must be at night. Bomb any petrol station you come across. Put fire on any police vehicle you come across. Beat any police officer you come across.”
His incendiary rhetoric led to a counter-terrorism investigation, and he was subsequently fired from his job as a science teacher.
Chinyanga was arrested at his north London home on February 25, 2020, following reports from the public. During police questioning, he admitted to posting the controversial content, which was assessed as promoting extremist violence.
In 2022, Chinyanga was sentenced and served two years for his actions, and upon his release from Wandsworth Prison, the UK government initiated deportation proceedings. He is currently awaiting to be exiled back to Zimbabwe.
