The COSAFA Women’s Championship kicks off on October 22, with all 14 teams ready to compete for the coveted trophy in Gqeberha, South Africa.
Last year’s tournament saw unexpected records set in South Africa, as Malawi became the fourth different winner of the competition in as many years, claiming their maiden title in Gauteng province.
This year, the tournament returns to Mzansi, featuring top players from various countries, including Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga, the 2023 Golden Boot winner, and Zambia’s Barbra Banda, who are currently ranked among the world’s best.
In Group A, seven-time champions South Africa will face Namibia, Eswatini, and Seychelles. The first match of the 2024 championship will see Eswatini take on Seychelles, followed by Namibia and South Africa on October 22.
Zimbabwe a champion in 2011 and the first team to break South Africa’s hold on the COSAFA Women’s Championship—has been placed in Group D alongside Lesotho and Mozambique.
The Mighty Warriors will clash with Mozambique at Gelvandale Stadium on October 24, as they aim to end their title drought.
In 2023, the Mighty Warriors secured a bronze medal, with goalkeeper Cynthia Shongwe earning the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award after conceding just two goals.
As the tournament prepares to kick off on October 22, fans from across the Southern African region are eager to witness their nations make history and impactful performances in Gqeberha.
Mighty Warriors supporters, in particular, will be hoping for silverware from their team.
