Beitbridge –– The much-anticipated Minister of State (MOS) 2025 Mat South Junior Championships officially kicked off today, showcasing the sporting talents of young athletes from three districts: Gwanda, Beitbridge, and Matobo.

The opening games are being held across multiple venues in the region, with Dulibadzimu Stadium and Prison Grounds hosting girls’ and boys’ soccer, Vhembe High School featuring athletics events, St Joseph’s Secondary School hosting handball matches, St Mary’s High School accommodating boys’ volleyball, and Beitbridge Government Primary School holding girls’ volleyball competitions.

This year’s championships are being held under the theme: “Champions for a Drug-Free Future,” placing a strong emphasis on drug awareness and encouraging the youth to make healthy life choices.

Participants from different districts engaged in a campaign urging their peers to stay away from drugs, adding a social responsibility element to the sporting event.

Speaking to Ziyah News Network, excited participants shared their enthusiasm. One young athlete from Gwanda commented, “I am thrilled to be part of this championship. It’s a great chance to showcase our talent and also learn about the dangers of drugs.”

A handball player from St Joseph’s Secondary School added, “It feels amazing to compete with other districts. We hope people from our communities come to cheer us on.”

Organizers are calling on local residents to come and support the young talent, highlighting the importance of community involvement in nurturing the next generation of champions.

“These young athletes are the future of our region, both in sports and in living drug-free lives. We encourage everyone to come out and support them,” said District Sports Officer Mangore Loveness.

The championships will continue over the coming days, with hopes that more districts will participate in future editions, expanding opportunities for youth development and community engagement.
