POLICE in Beitbridge have intercepted 469.436 kilogrammes of dagga believed to have been smuggled into Zimbabwe from South Africa, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
Connias Muleya (35), Charles Makanga (39), Rabsom Mashingaidze (54), and Emmanuel Sibanda (35) were arrested in connection with the dagga.
All four suspects are from Beitbridge.
Speaking to Ziyah News Network the Officer Commanding Beitbridge Police District , Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, confirmed the July 21arrests.
The suspects were arrested at River Ranch in Beitbridge West.
Ncube said police received information that a consignment of dagga had been illegally smuggled into the country through the Limpopo River and was being transported inland.
Police intercepted two vehicles—a Toyota Probox and a Honda Fit—which were searched, leading to the recovery of 469.436kg of dagga.
“The suspects were arrested after police intercepted the vehicles and recovered the dagga, which is believed to have been smuggled into Zimbabwe from South Africa through an illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River,” said Chief Superintendent Ncube.
The four suspects have since appeared before the courts, and the matter is pending.
Chief Superintendent Ncube warned individuals involved in drug trafficking and other criminal activities that law enforcement agencies remain committed to combating crime in the district.
“We want to send a strong warning to those involved in drug dealing and smuggling that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with them. Our goal is to make Beitbridge a safe community free from drugs and other criminal activities,” he said.
He also commended members of the public for their continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies, saying community involvement remains critical in the fight against crime.
“We appreciate the information and support we continue to receive from members of the public. We encourage residents to keep reporting criminal activities as we work together to curb drug trafficking and make our communities safer,” said Chief Superintendent Ncube.
The latest seizure is one of the biggest drug busts recorded in the district this year and highlights the ongoing efforts by police to curb the smuggling and distribution of illicit drugs through the border town.
