94 people have been confirmed dead after an illegal ferry capsized in Nampula province , Mozambique a local journalist in the Southern African country has confirmed . The majority of victims are women and children.
26 of the suspected 130 people aboard the ferry are missing whilst 11 others have been hospitalised .The boat operating between Lunga in the Nampula province and the Island of Mozambique was allegedly overcrowded with women and children fleeing from a devastating cholera outbreak ravaging the province.
The ferry sank late Sunday afternoon and rescue efforts continued into this morning (Monday) with hopes of finding more survivors dwindling.
Southern Africa has been battling a troubling cholera outbreak for months now spreading across Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and some parts of South Africa.
