Eager Zimbabwe football fans will gather around their screens at exactly 3 pm Zimbabwean time, to witness the beginning of a new era in Zimbabwean football – the Michael Nees era. The Zimbabwe Warriors, led by their new coach, take to the field against the Harambe Stars of Kenya in their first encounter of the Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a weight of expectation from fans back home and across the world rested on their shoulders.

After a disappointing start to their 2026 World Cup campaign which is already in tatters and can only be salvaged by a miracle, fans hopeful that Nees’ arrival can bring a change in the team’s fortunes. The confusion in June, when ZIFA failed to appoint a coach and relied on a makeshift technical team led by Jairos Tapera, is now a thing of the past

Nees has a chance to start afresh and tap into the pool of talented young players, including Tawanda Chirewa, Tawanda Masvanhise, and Jordan Zemura who are capable of exorcising the ghost of the June debacle.

The return of veterans Khama Billiat and Washington Arubi will no doubt add the much needed experience to the team, and when called upon help the youngsters navigate turbulent waters. Although the team’s record against the Harambe Stars is not impressive, there is belief that Nees and his team will write a new chapter in the Warriors’ history today.

Post cards from Uganda have shown the team is in good spirits and it’s all systems go and by. The legion of Warriors fans are hoping and praying that by the time the clock strikes 5pm  , they will be singing their favourite Warriors song Baya waBaya !
