Harare-Its build up has been marred by a group in the ruling party that has become to be known as the 2030ists, and now it’s finally here, the ZANU PF conference kicks off today with the holding of the Politburo at the proverbial home of the revolutionary party in Harare.
The politburo meeting will be succeeded by a central Committee meeting tomorrow at the same venue before proceedings move to the City of Kings and Queens where President Mnangagwa is expected to officially open the conference.
The ruling party’s conference which comes hardly a year after President Emmerson Mnangagwa secured his second term, has been topical with some even confusing it to an elective congress largely due to pot shots and pockets of tension whether real or imagined birthed by the 2030ists.
Whilst President Mnangagwa is on record saying he respects the country’s constitution and will never attempt to tweak it for personal benefit, the 2030ists have continued with their drive for the incumbent to continue at the helm of the country beyond 2028 when his second term is scheduled to come to an end.
Recently, properties belonging to tow senior party members in Harare were petrol bombed by unknown assailants. The offices of Harare Chairperson Goodwills Masimirembwa were petrol bombed this past weekend and his deputy’s home was also attacked with the same modus operandi.
Whilst police investigations into the two attacks are still ongoing, political speculation has been rife pointing to an inside job birthed from the two being members of the group that is pushing for President Mnangagwa to stay beyond his mandated term.
However ZANU PF Director of information Cde Farai Marapira has played down the hype around the conference and the subsequent mistaken identity it has been apportioned. He says the Indaba which begins today is all about celebrating the good works and stewardship of President Mnangagwa contrary to misconceptions in the public domain.
“We are gathered to celebrate the work and achievements of His Excellency, the President. This conference is about celebrating the strides we have made under is stewardship. We are coming together as a party to honour the accomplishments of our President, not to entertain distractions,” he said.
The ZANU PF indaba is also coming at a time when the local currency the ZWG has hit turbulent waters and delegates are expected to come up with resolutions that will influence monetary policy pronouncements around the local unit.
