The City of Harare has issued a clarification regarding the recent bed bug outbreak, commonly referred to as tsikidzi, stating that the infestation remains confined to Mbare Flats.

 This announcement comes in response to a surge of social media reports suggesting the problem has expanded to other suburbs.

In an update provided by the City Council, authorities emphasized their commitment to address the concerns of residents. They confirmed that investigations into the infestation thus far indicate that it is limited to Mbare.

“So far, the infestation is confined to Mbare although our teams have been dispatched to assess other areas reported on social media to have bed bugs,” they commented.

To mitigate residents’ worries, the City of Harare has deployed a dedicated team to evaluate the situation in the areas mentioned online. The city is actively monitoring developments to prevent any potential spread of the infestation.

The City Council also revealed that they have activated their Incident Management System, implemented in response to the outbreak at Mbare Flats.

 “Following the bed bugs infestation at Mbare Flats recently, the City Council has activated its Incident Management System to effectively respond to the bed bugs,” the statement explained.

Additionally, they have developed a comprehensive Incident Action Plan aimed at coordinating the city’s response to the outbreak.The plan entails measures to ensure a swift and effective approach to both containment and eradication of the pests.

A call has also been made for support from the private sector, community partners, and individuals willing to assist in tackling the issue.

 “Any partners, private sector or individuals who would like to offer their support in fighting this outbreak can get in touch with the Incident Liaison Officer,” the council urged.

Residents and interested parties are thus encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspected bed bug activity. The City of Harare is dedicated to restoring safety and comfort to its residents amidst this public health challenge.
