OVER 90 local athletes gathered at Croc Gardens on Sunday, transforming the annual Running Is Our Therapy (RIOT) marathon into a powerful community stand against drug substance abuse.

The event, which kicked off at 5:00 AM, featured participants competing in 5km, 10km, 21km, and full 42km distances. While the races tested physical endurance, the core message from organizers and participants was clear, fitness is a vital tool in steering the youth away from the growing drug epidemic.

Beitbridge Municipality Town Clerk, Loud Ramagkapola, praised the initiative for providing a productive alternative to criminal activities and drug use. Speaking to Ziyah News Network, Ramagkapola said that keeping the mind and body occupied is key to prevention.

“The RIOT initiative is helping in terms of fighting drug abuse. We need Beitbridge youth to join so they can avoid drugs by staying busy with exercise for good health,” Ramagkapola said.

He further urged local schools to partner with the program to ensure students secure their futures through discipline and physical fitness.

The winners of the day used their platforms saing “No to Drugs” sentiment.

Mabutho Ncube, a RIOT member who secured first place in the grueling 42km marathon from Croco Foods to Lutumba and back, encouraged his peers to trade addiction for athletics.

“I would like to encourage those youth on drugs to join RIOT and get busy with running,” Ncube said. “It is for your best health and even job creation. I say to the youth: say no to drugs and join us for a better future.”

Tinevimbo Chisandure, a talented young athlete who came first in the 10km race, said how sports provides a necessary distraction for teenagers.

“These races keep you from losing yourself to drugs,” Chisandure said. “I am encouraging those of my age to stay away from substances because sports takes up your time and builds your physique.”

The RIOT marathon continues to grow as a pillar of unity in Beitbridge. By combining competitive sports with social advocacy, the event aims to foster a healthier, drug-free environment for the town’s residents.
