PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has strongly condemned the growing abuse of social media, particularly the recording and circulation of road traffic accident scenes.

He said the practice is inhumane and contrary to the values of Ubuntu.

Speaking during the 46th independence in Maphisa on Saturday, Mnangagwa expressed deep concern over what he called the reckless use of digital platforms by some individuals and groups.

“I note with grave concern the increasing abuse of social media by some unscrupulous persons and groups. The recording of road traffic accidents and the subsequent distribution of such material is totally unacceptable, inhumane and against the values of Ubuntu,” he said.

He said his administration will take decisive action to curb harmful online behavior and safeguard citizens from the negative effects of emerging technologies.

“My Administration will, without apology, protect our citizens, especially children, as well as our culture, beliefs and way of life, from the hazards of media and new technologies,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when Zimbabwe is grappling with a surge in digital misconduct, including the spread of violent imagery, abusive language and other harmful online content that has raised concern among authorities and communities.

Government officials have increasingly pointed to the role of monetisation on social media platforms in fueling the trend.

In December 2025, Deputy Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Dingumuzi Phuti told senators that financial incentives offered by platforms such as TikTok were encouraging users to produce provocative and sometimes harmful content in pursuit of views and income.

The government has since indicated that regulatory and policy measures may be strengthened to address the evolving digital landscape, amid growing calls to balance technological advancement with the protection of societal values.
