Church leaders in Beitbridge have begun mobilising congregants for a town clean-up campaign scheduled for June 19.
Different church leaders met on June 12 at the urban residence of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution to discuss preparations for the campaign and encourage participation among their members.
The initiative is being coordinated by Mrs Nguluvhe, wife of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, on behalf of First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa.
The meeting was attended by Mrs Nguluvhe, Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) president Edgar Maireva, representatives from Pentecostal churches including Lutheran, Methodist and Full Gospel denominations.
Also Zion churches such as the Old Apostolic Church in Zion, Zion Christian Church Judea and Masowe groups were part of the meeting.
Speaking during the meeting, Mrs Nguluvhe said the gathering was aimed at mobilising churches to support the clean-up campaign.
“The purpose of today’s meeting is to spearhead the clean-up campaign taking place on June 19 by mobilising Beitbridge churches to come together and clean their town,” she said.
ACCZ president Edgar Maireva said churches were working together to encourage residents to participate in large numbers.
“As ACCZ, we are working together with churches encouraging people to turn out in large numbers for the awaited clean-up campaign,” he said.
Maireva also said that the campaign would also help instil cleanliness values among young people.
“It is important to teach our youth to always be clean by demonstrating as elders during this campaign,” he said.
Waste Management Supervisor Oratile Makwaiba said the initiative seeks to promote proper waste management and discourage littering in towns and cities across Zimbabwe.
She also said preparations for the campaign were already underway, with organisers awaiting confirmation of the venue from the Environmental Management Agency
