The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Beitbridge conducted a comprehensive mass campaign today at Beitbridge bus terminus (Rank), aimed at reducing crime and strengthening community-police relations. The initiative, part of ongoing efforts to foster trust and collaboration, brought together community members and law enforcement officers to address pressing security concerns in the area.

Dispol Superintendent Melusi Ncube, who addressed the gathering, reviewed recent crime statistics including cases of rape, robbery, and assault recorded to date.

He stressed the critical role community members play in crime prevention, emphasizing that “the police cannot be present in every corner; therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to report crimes or suspicious activities to help keep Beitbridge safe.”

He further urged residents to report misconduct, even if it involves police officers.

“If police demand bribes or act improperly, report these cases. Accountability starts with us,” he stated.

The campaign also highlighted the detrimental impact of drug abuse on community safety. Sup Ncube warned that substances like hallucinations-inducing drugs and depressants contribute to increased criminal activity.

“Drug abuse destroys lives and fuels crime; we urge everyone to stay away from these harmful substances for their own safety and that of the community,” he stated.

In addition, Major Regedzai from the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) addressed specific issues related to vandalism and theft of NRZ property, including signal copper cables.

“Vandalism and theft disrupt essential services and pose dangers to the community. We call on residents to report any such activities and help us protect our infrastructure,” he said.

He also raised concerns about the alarming trend of people using railway lines as dens for drug abuse and sleeping in unsafe conditions.

“Individuals often get intoxicated along the railway lines and are unaware of approaching trains, putting their lives at serious risk,” Major Regedzai warned.

“This behavior not only endangers their lives but also hampers railway operations.”

The campaign wrapped up with a call for collective responsibility: ‘Crime prevention is a shared effort. The need for community cooperation to build a safer Beitbridge and that togetherness can create an environment where residents feel secure and confident in their surroundings.

The ZRP Beitbridge mass campaign demonstrated the police department’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and community engagement, setting a positive tone  collaboration between the police and the public  in fighting crime thus enhancing public safety.
