Tongwe rural Centre in Beitbridge is hosting the World Rabies day awareness commemoration and a campaign today.
The Veterinary Department, with the community rally together to break the boundaries which serves as focal point of joining forces, educating the community about the infectious disease, under the theme “breaking rabies boundaries”.
The chosen theme reflects the pressing need to move beyond the status quo, where rabies elimination remains elusive for many parts of the world, causing suffering and claiming both human and animal lives.
Beitbridge District Veterinary Extension supervisor, Sithokozile Sibanda, emphasised that people in the community have to know about rabies disease and how to prevent it, in time as it can be fatal.
“As People living so close to animals such as dogs, jackals, cats, it is crucial that villagers are educated about rabies” Sibanda said.
Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease which is lethal but also preventable. The ailment does cut across humans and animals, affecting also, dogs, cats and foxes and all animals in the dog family.
According to the Veterinarian protocol animals have to be vaccinated 1st dose at 3months, and annually thereafter, in order to prevent the disease which is transmitted from animals to humans in most cases has no cure.
