The Municipality of Beitbridge (MoB) says it is working with Government to clamp down on unregistered schools sprouting up in the border town.

MoB said it it is concerned the schools are operating without necessary requirements.

Among the missing requirements are health certificates issued after inspections are done by experts for the institutions to be safe and suitable.

In a notice posted on Friday MoB said it is launching an operation against such school and will be working with the relevant ministry to enforce registration..

“Notice is hereby given to all owners and administrators of unregistered schools that the Municipality of Beitbridge in conjunction with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will soon commence an operation to enforce registration of schools,” MoB said in a notice shared on social media.

“It has come to the attention of the local authority that there is a proliferation of unregistered ECD centres, private colleges and independent schools operating within the municipal jurisdiction,” it said.

These institutions are reportedly operating without the following official registration certifications from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

They also do not have approved Health and Safety inspection reports, and lack valid town planning reports (change of use) for the premises and operating licences.

This meant some of the schools operated at houses, industrial building or housing flats or business centres not meant for the purpose.

“All owners and administrators of the unregistered educational institutiuons are hereby ordered not to open for the upcoming school term until the institution has fully regularised with both the municipality and the ministry ” said the notice signed by the Town Clerk Loud Ramakgapola.

“The local authority and the ministry will conduct a thorough blitz shutting down illegal schools. Parents are strongly advised NOT to enrol their children in any institution that has not been confirmed as registered. Your prompt attention to this matter is appreciated.”

An investigation by Ziyah News Network established that several private schools rarely offered sports activities.

Although many parents ignore sports in preference to academics, sports activities significantly help learners by boosting physical health, sharpening mental focus.

Sports also assist developing of crucial social-emotional skills like teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership.

Thee, research says, contribute to better academic performance, improved self-confidence, and overall well-rounded development, teaching them to handle challenges and work towards goals.

The schools accomodated at improper places also lack adequate ablution facilities.

Recommended school ablution facilities prioritise safety, hygiene, accessibility, and privacy, including separate, functional toilets for boys and girls , and staff.

They should have accessible handwashing stations with soap near toilets and eating areas, clean water, and consideration for menstruation and disabilities.

These should be supported by proper maintenance and hygiene education.

Key features include lockable doors, proper ventilation, durable materials, and dedicated spaces for washing hands and, if needed, for religious ablutions.

All these must have facilities for wheelchairs’ passage, according to the human rights dictates.
