Bikita Minerals has announced the completion of the construction of a 112-kilometer power line that runs from Mashava where the newly constructed 90MW solar power station will supply electricity to its lithium sulphate plant in Bikita, Masvingo province.
This development comes at a crucial time as Zimbabwe grapples with ongoing load shedding due to inadequate power supply from the Kariba Dam.
The newly constructed power plant with the high voltage power line is expected to generate approximately 90 megawat(MW) of electricity which excess to the company’s requirements thus feeding the national grid.
Collins Nikisi, the Public Relations Officer for Bikita Minerals, shared insight into the project during an interview with the Ministry of Information, emphasizing its positive impact on the local community.
“As Bikita, we only use 20MW of the generated power, which means that 70MW will be available for the community,” Nikisi explained.
This excess capacity could play a vital role in alleviating the current energy shortages faced by the residents of Bikita and the surrounding areas.
By providing accessible electricity, the initiative is expected to spur economic growth, enhance the quality of life, and support local businesses.
Nikisi further highlighted the commitment of Bikita Minerals to sustainable development and community welfare.
“Our goal is not only to meet our operational needs but also to contribute to the overall well-being of the communities where we operate,”he stated.
