Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has officially approved the proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy Framework, marking a bold step towards advancing the nation into a technology-driven future as envisaged in the Government’s economic blueprint and ICT masterplan.
The announcement was made by Jenfan Muswere, Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting during post cabinet brief done in harare yesterday.
This strategic initiative, aimed at enhancing economic growth and industrialisation, was presented by Honourable Dr. Fredrick Shava, Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, who chaired the Cabinet Committee on Innovation, Technology Development, and Application.
During the briefing, Muswere highlighted that the strategy is intricately aligned with the National Development Strategy (NDS1) as well as the Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Masterplan.
“This comprehensive framework is aimed at driving economic growth through industrialization by promoting the adoption of AI technologies in key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, mining, and services,” Muswere stated.
“The move to embrace AI is not merely modernising our capabilities but also a crucial step towards transforming Zimbabwe into a robust technological economy,” he added.
The strategy sets forth a vision to modernise Zimbabwe’s economy and facilitate a shift from a resource-based model to one powered by technology and innovation.
A critical aspect of this initiative includes the development of vital digital infrastructure, including high-capacity fiber networks and the rollout of 5G technologies.
“Developing a solid digital infrastructure is essential for enabling AI adoption across various sectors of the economy,” Muswere added.
“By prioritising these technologies, we aim to enhance productivity, stimulate growth, and establish Zimbabwe as a competitive player in the global economy.”
Cabinet officials believe that by adopting this innovative strategy, Zimbabwe is poised to harness the transformative potential of AI to unlock new economic opportunities and improve the overall quality of life for its citizens.
The AI Strategy Framework is anticipated to drive substantial advancements in multiple sectors, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s development trajectory as it includes adoption of these crucial new technologies that are becoming the heart of development across the world.
