A Chinhoyi man has been jailed after assaulting his mother-in-law during a heated confrontation at Hunyani Farm last month.
Gift Katongomara (25) appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court, where he was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for assault. Six months of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behavior, while the remaining 12 months were suspended on condition he performs 240 hours of community service.
The court heard that on 17 August 2025, Katongomara went to his ex-wife’s homestead in search of her. A misunderstanding arose, leading him to shout obscenities outside the house. The victim, his mother-in-law, came outside to intervene.
Instead of calming down, Katongomara continued using vulgar language. The situation escalated when he picked up a stone and struck the woman on the left side of the head, injuring her.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), in a statement, urged the public to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than violence.
“The NPAZ urges people to seek mediation or third-party help when disputes arise, so that disagreements can be resolved peacefully before they turn violent.”
The authority also reminded the public of its ongoing campaign against violent crime, stressing that offenders will face the full wrath of the law.
