South African authorities have confirmed the arrest of Joacham Chivayo, a Zimbabwean national, along with his South African accomplice, Ayanda Brian Gungwa, after the duo was found with gold bullion valued at approximately R15 million.

The pair were apprehended by the Hawks, South Africa’s elite Serious Organized Crime Investigation team, during an operation at Helderwyk Estate. Their arrest raises alarms over the increasing issues of illegal gold trade and smuggling in the region, although the origins of the seized gold remain undisclosed.

Chivayo, 33, has garnered attention due to his ambiguous ties to controversial figures in the tenderpreneur and gold dealing circles, but specifics about these relationships have yet to be clarified.

This has sparked speculation regarding the potential involvement of more influential players in the gold trade.

Reports indicate that the gold was confiscated by the Hawks during a raid, and authorities have emphasised its estimated value of R15 million.

While the investigation is ongoing, details regarding the gold’s source and whether the suspects have previous links to illegal activities have not been released.

This arrest is part of South Africa’s broader initiative to combat organised crime and illegal mining operations, which have become increasingly problematic, especially in border areas with Zimbabwe.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to delve deeper into the network behind the gold trafficking operation, potentially leading to more arrests in the weeks ahead.
