The Consumer Protection Commission has warned the public against a sugar brand named star, flagging it for being underweight in the process fleecing unsuspecting consumers. According to the Consumer watchdog, the brand has been selling sugar labelled 2kgs but in reality is 400 grams short of the said weight.
“The Consumer Protection Commission, working with the Trade Measures department in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has confiscated sugar labelled Star brand which is being sold in the market underweight. Perpetrators who were caught selling this sugar were taken to court and made to pay heavy fines. From the samples taken a supposed 2kg packet of sugar was found to be weighing 1.6kgs,” said CPC in a media statement.
In its communication to the public, the Commission urged consumers to be on the lookout for this brand that is being sold well short of it mass and report retailer selling the product.
“The Commission would want to urge members of the public to report to the Commission anyone selling this type of sugar, as it is being packaged illegally and sold to unsuspecting consumers short in mass.
