Prosper Taurai Vanhuvaone, a 29-year-old man from Bulawayo, has been sentenced to 84 months imprisonment for posing as a doctor and swindling over $8,000 from vulnerable individuals.
The sentence includes 18 months suspended for 5 years on condition of good behavior and 24 months suspended on condition that he repays $8,165 in restitution by July 30, 2025. The effective imprisonment term is 42 months.
The Bulawayo Magistrates Court heard that between February and September 2024, the offender orchestrated a calculated scheme to exploit vulnerable individuals at Mpilo Central Hospital and in the Bulawayo Central Business District (CBD).
Posing as a qualified doctor, he misled several victims into paying him promising that he can process a Certificate of Sponsorship and can secure a nurse training vacancy at Mpilo Hospital. The total value of money he swindled amounted to US$8000.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), states that this case sends a strong message about the consequences of fraud, especially when public trust is manipulated for personal gain.
