Bulawayo– A police officer based in Bulawayo has been brought before the Tredgold Magistrates’ Court on criminal abuse of office charges. It is the State’s case that Memory Sayi (38) abused her position as a police officer two coerce an offender to pay a $30 ‘fine’ that was not receipted and went straight into her pockets before making last ditch efforts to receipt the amount when the complainant’s boss raised alarm.

According to the National Prosecution Authority, alleagations against Sayi are that on the 20th of May 2024, the accused person in the company of a colleague came across Donald Muchemi, the complainant, who was driving a commuter omnibus. He dropped passengers at an undesignated point. The two Police Officers arrested the complainant and escorted him to the Bulawayo Traffic Office.

The accused person was instructed to escort the complainant to the Fines Office where he was supposed to deposit his fine. The accused person informed the complainant that he was going to pay USD160 at the Fines Office and allegedly coerced him to pay her USD30 instead. The complainant later informed the owner of the commuter omnibus of the offence and they made a Police report.

When the accused person heard about the complaint she allegedly receipted the USD30 and forged the complainant’s signature. Sayi was granted USD100 bail.
