A young man from Chinhoyi’s insatiable thirst for the wise waters led him to stealing US$200 landing him in the dock leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing to a suspended 8 months jail term on condition of restitution and performing 140 hours of community service by the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court on theft .
The State alleged that Takesure Foya on the 12th of August 2024, found the complainant counting some money in her room. The complainant later placed the money, USD200, in a black wallet which she stashed under her clothes.
The complainant found the accused person in her room alone on the 15th of August 2024 but this did not surprise the complainant as the accused person used to get into the complainant’s room even in her absence.
The offence came to light the following day when the complainant heard that the accused person was on a drinking spree. The complainant proceeded to check her wallet and she noticed that it was missing. A Police report was made leading to the arrest of the accused person. Investigations led to the recovery of the black wallet. The total value stolen was USD200 and nothing was recovered.
Foya was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment of which 3 months was suspended for 5 years. Further, 1 month was suspended on condition of restitution. A further 4 months was suspended on condition that he performs 140 hours of community service.
