Econet Wireless, Zimbabwe’s largest mobile network operator, has dismissed recent social media claims alleging a data breach involving its customer records.
The company has categorically denied any unauthorized access to its systems and reassured its subscribers of the security of their data.
The allegations surfaced on February 4, 2025, through a social media post on the platform X claiming that, a purported hacker offered a list containing personal details of 852,791 Econet subscribers for sale.
This news quickly gained traction online, raising concerns among customers and stakeholders about the safety of their information.
In response, Econet Wireless issued an official statement addressing the allegations and outlining the steps taken to investigate the matter.
“We are aware of a social media post claiming that a threat actor is selling part of our subscriber database. We take such claims very seriously and have thoroughly investigated the matter,” read part of the statement
According to Econet, the company partnered with international cybersecurity experts to comprehensively review its systems and investigation revealed no evidence of a security breach or unauthorized access to customer data beyond information that is already publicly available or accessible through third parties.
“Our internal investigations began on the same day the allegations were made public. Thus far, we have not detected any breach that would compromise sensitive customer information. However, to ensure the ongoing safety of our customers’ data, we have been monitoring our systems around the clock,” statement further explains
By working closely with cybersecurity specialists, the company has ensured that its systems remain secure and that potential threats are swiftly addressed.
While Econet has not found evidence of a breach, the company reassured customers that it remains vigilant and proactive in its approach to cybersecurity.
“The protection of our customers’ information is our top priority. We will continue to invest in advanced security solutions to ensure their data remains safe,” they stated.
The allegations of a data breach have been a cause for concern, especially for Econet users, as many feared that their private information might be exposed publicly.
