Former Liberian President and 1995 Ballon d’Or winner George Weah has dismissed social media rumours claiming that billionaire Elon Musk approached him to sell the Ballon d’Or award.
George Weah took to social media to set the record straight, confirming that his Ballon d’Or award is indeed not for sale. He also clarified that contrary to rumours that Elon Musk has never made an offer to purchase the award.
“While it is true that my Ballon D’or trophy is not for sale, as I have said many times, Mr. Musk has never offered to buy it. The story trending on social media is untrue and inaccurate. I have to make this clarification for the sake of truth and to set the record straight,” Weah stated.
The rumour mill has been in overdrive claiming Musk offered to buy the award until it drew the attention of the former Liberian President.
In 1995, Weah became the only African to win the Ballon d’Or award. He was awarded the African footballer of the year three times, named the FIFA World player of the year and included amongst the top 50 greatest players of all time.
