THE Government has finally reacted to a public outcry and started repairing a stretch on the Beitbridge- Bulawayo highway that had been cause for concern to motorists and a haven for armed robber targeting slow moving traffic.
Giving an update on his activities on several social media platforms on Monday September 8, 2025 Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland South Albert Nguluvhe said work had started.
“This is a welcome development since this place had been difficult to drive through. The journey between Beitbridge (and Bulawayo) has been a challenge. Of late a lot or robberies had been taking place along the detour at this place.Tourists and cross-borders transportershave been experiencing more unexpected expenses before reaching their final designations,” said the update from Nguluvhe’s office.
He is reported to have emphasised on the benefits of a completed Beitbridge to Bulawayo road, a major economic artery for the province.
Because Government is working on upgrading the Gwanda-Maphisa route from Beitbridge, as the country heads for 2026 Independence celebrations to be celebrated at Maphisa.
Prior to this, people would first drive to Bulawayo increasing the distance by close to 200 kilometres.
Recently Nguluvhe said Government choice of hosting the country’s next birthday at Maphisa had massive economic and infrastructure benefits for Matabeleland South which will witness accessibility developments.
“Several roads will be developed from the preparatory budget and roads are an economic driver, we must be able to travel inside our province,” he said then.
Besides, the province was likely to host more tourists using the Beitbridge to Bulawayo road to access Matopos and tye Victoria Falls, he said.
Earlier this month police at Beitbridge arrested a gang of eight armed robbers who preyed on slow moving vehicles negotiating the stretch about five kilometres long.
