The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has officially opened to traffic a newly completed 3.3-kilometre section of the Harare–Mazowe Road dualisation project, marking a key milestone in the ongoing Harare–Kanyemba Road Upgrading and Widening Project.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister Hon. J.K. Sacco presided over the commissioning ceremony this afternoon, where he toured the completed stretch before declaring it open to motorists.

The Harare–Kanyemba project, one of Zimbabwe’s flagship road infrastructure programmes, will see the upgrading and widening of 357 kilometres of road, alongside the construction of a modernised border post at Kanyemba. The road will be dualised from Nemakonde Way in Harare to the Mvurwi turnoff, creating a vital regional transport corridor.

In his remarks, Hon. Sacco said the project is expected to transform Zimbabwe into a critical regional transit hub once completed.

“This development will position Zimbabwe as a key gateway within the region, creating the shortest and most efficient route from Harare to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he said.

He added that the project would have significant economic spin-offs.

“It presents a key that will unlock immense potential for the country’s economic growth,” the Deputy Minister noted.

Hon. Sacco was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Eng. J.P. Makumbe, Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland Central Province Mr. T. Maregere, as well as directors, heads of parastatals, and other senior government officials.

The government has been prioritising major road infrastructure projects as part of its Vision 2030 agenda, with the Harare–Kanyemba road seen as strategic in boosting trade, regional integration, and domestic economic activity.
