Chivi, Masvingo – The Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services held a vital cybersecurity conference at Chivi Growth Point, marking a significant step towards enhancing digital safety in rural communities.
This event was part of the ongoing National Cyber Security Awareness Month and aligns with President Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa’s vision of ensuring equitable access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as the nation progresses toward Vision 2030.
During her address at the Chivi conference, Minister Hon. Dr. Tatenda Mavetera highlighted the significant opportunities that digital transformation brings to Zimbabwe, including growth and empowerment. However, she also underscored the new risks that accompany this transformation, stating that it is imperative to address these challenges with urgency.
“We are working tirelessly to protect our citizens, businesses, and the nation at large from the ever-increasing cyber threats,” she remarked.
Minister Mavetera noted the rising connectivity in rural regions and the related increase in cyber threats, such as cyberbullying, fraud, identity theft, and hacking. She emphasized that rural residents are just as vulnerable to these risks as their urban counterparts.
“This conference is a vital platform to ensure that communities like Chivi have the knowledge and tools needed to stay vigilant,” she stated.
Closing the event on an optimistic note, Minister Mavetera reiterated the government’s commitment to equipping all Zimbabweans with the necessary tools for thriving in a secure digital landscape. She encouraged the community to embrace technological advancements while being mindful of the associated risks.
The conference not only demonstrated a commitment to combating cyber threats but also outlined various initiatives as part of a larger National Cyber Security Awareness Campaign. This campaign involves collaboration with law enforcement and financial institutions, including the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, to foster a safer digital environment for all citizens.
