A viral Facebook post by popular content creator Muku1 has brought to light the difficult circumstances faced by Gogo Betty Jiri, the 85-year-old widow of Zimbabwe’s renowned philanthropist Jairos Jiri, founder of the Jairos Jiri Association for persons with disabilities.
The post was prompted after Gogo Betty personally contacted Muku1, recognizing him from her granddaughter’s phone and familiar with his charitable work. She requested a meeting with the young philanthropist, sharing her story and current struggles.
Born in 1939 and married at just 17, Gogo Betty has played a significant role in Zimbabwe’s social development.
During their conversation, she recounted how she and her late husband dedicated their lives to rescuing disabled individuals from the streets, providing them with shelter, dignity, and hope. Her efforts helped establish the Jairos Jiri Association, which has transformed countless lives, including that of disability activist and former Bulawayo Mayor Joshua Malinga.
Gogo Betty is now living in severe hardship. She is confined to a single room at the Jairos Jiri centre, with only water in her refrigerator and relying on a broken wheelchair that hampers her mobility.
Her situation has sparked widespread concern, prompting calls for immediate intervention to improve her living conditions and ensure her dignity in her later years.
After all the remarkable philanthropic work they have contributed to Zimbabwe, this situation calls for the government to step in and provide the necessary support. The story underscores an urgent need to recognize and support Zimbabwe’s unsung heroes, especially those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.
