US rapper Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has publicly denied serious allegations claiming he and Sean “Diddy” Combs drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
The lawsuit, recently amended to include Carter as a defendant, asserts that the alleged assault occurred in a private residence in New York and involved the presence of an unnamed female celebrity.
In a passionate statement posted on social media, Jay-Z condemned the legal action as a “blackmail attempt.”
He described receiving a demand letter from Texas-based lawyer Tony Buzbee, suggesting that the allegations aimed to pressure him into settling the case.
“What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle. No sir, it had the opposite effect!” said Jay-Z. He firmly declared his intent to fight back against the claims and asserted he would not pay Buzbee “ONE RED PENNY!!”
Diddy, currently in jail awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking and other offenses, also denied the accusations.
His legal team described the amended lawsuit as a continuation of “shameless publicity stunts” designed to extract financial settlements from terrified celebrities.
The statement emphasized confidence that the judicial process would ultimately prove Mr. Combs innocent of all allegations.
The allegations in the lawsuit were detailed by the accuser, identified only as “Jane Doe,” who claims she was lured to the party in question under false pretenses and subjected to drug facilitated assault.
She asserts that after feeling unwell from a drink, she was assaulted by both men while another celebrity purportedly watched.
Buzbee, the attorney representing the accuser, responded to criticism of the lawsuit by stating his commitment to ensure his clients are heard and protected from intimidation. He promised to bring the truth to light, declaring, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.”
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, and the accuser claims she continues to grapple with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression stemming from the alleged incident. In his statement, Jay-Z expressed concern for his family, particularly the impact of the allegations on his children in light of media coverage, highlighting the “cruelty and greed of people” in such situations.
As the legal proceedings unfold, both Jay-Z and Diddy continue to assert their innocence, while the case raises significant questions around celebrity culture, accountability, and the complexities of legal actions in allegations of sexual violence.
